Willie is a true "Character". Willie came to NMAF with his brother, Billie, in late August from a rural NM shelter where the pair could not be touched by any of the staff. Initial shots could not even be given as they were so fearful and reactive to human interaction. They were unadoptable and would have been put down. We know nothing of their history, just that they were picked up as strays. In foster care at first together, after a few weeks of settling in, they were separated into different foster homes to encourage their bonding with humans. Since then, amazing progress has been made! Willie was the more "reluctant" of the pair to trust humans, but after about 3 weeks, he has finally started to come around. Curious and very intelligent, he decides on his own when the right time is to take the first steps towards trust. Handsome as can be, he looks up at you with his golden eyes from under scraggly brows as if to say, "I want to trust you - can I"? He will now let himself be petted, likes to relax on the couch with his favorite dinosaur toy, has integrated with other dogs in the household, and is actually playing like a young pup should. He is still reluctant to be picked up, but that will come in time. One of his favorite games is to have a "Howling Party" with his foster mom (see the video below). It is hilarious!

Willie needs a quiet home without young children and at least one other calm but still playful dog he can learn to trust. His current doggie playmates are quite a bit bigger than he is, and it took time for them to become trusted friends, but their size does not intimidate him now. Once Willie decides a dog is OK and won't hurt him, he opens up and becomes the happy little guy we always knew he could be. Under 15 pounds, Willie appears to be full grown, has all his shots, is microchipped, and neutered. He needs a special kind of family, one willing to give him his space until he decides to trust you - counseling on this approach will be provided to his Furever Family. As he can be fearful at first, it is imperative his new home be secure as he could pose a flight risk, so an "in-person" Home Visit will be required vs. a video one. This little guy will be worth the time and effort to watch his personality unfold!

Because home visits are required, NMAF dogs cannot be adopted out of the greater Albuquerque / Santa Fe area.
